The moment your child or close loved one is diagnosed with cancer, your life changes. You suddenly find yourself navigating a world of new terms, treatments and decisions.
At Walking Miracles, we don’t believe you should have to navigate this world alone. That’s why we provide guidance and support along each step of your journey.
The Walking Miracles Family Foundation provides assistance with the costs associated with travel for cancer treatment, help with patient navigation through resources and referral networks, as well as counseling services and survivorship.
The costs associated with travel to and from cancer treatment can be a major barrier to receiving the best care possible. The burden of travel in West Virginia is even more difficult because many rural areas have no public transportation—not even a bus system. In fact, the average family drives two to three hours each way to receive treatment. When you consider that one cycle of chemotherapy is typically given every day for five days in a row, the journey can seem like an uphill battle. At Walking Miracles, we believe that travel expenses should not be the deciding factor in where a family goes for treatment.
Walking Miracles Family Foundation, provides each family and survivor up to $500 in travel assistance. This card can be used for gas, lodging and food expenses associated with travel to and from cancer treatment in or out of West Virginia.
Families and survivors can apply with our nurse navigator twice a year for a $250 travel assistance card until they reach the total of $500 to talk with her and to fill out the application here. They can apply every year while in treatment and also during survivorship for follow up appointments.
The average family in West Virginia drives two to three hours each way to receive treatment.
Since our founding in 2012, Walking Miracles has provided over 250 families with more than $250,000 in assistance and reached families in 33 of 55 West Virginia counties.
“Walking Miracles has helped my family in so many ways with travel costs. I don’t know what we would have done without them.” Rob H.
